Better Living Through Duck Tape

As life goes on, you start to learn to coexist with the little indignities that come with aging. From thinning hair (except where I don’t want it thick) to struggling eyesight, I often find myself shrugging, accepting a new – less amazing – reality and moving on. But there are times when I have to take stock of just how far life is willing to push me.

I’ve been on hormone replacement for perimenopause for a bit now, and it’s been amazing. The estrogen comes in patches that I change twice a week, and I’ve never had an issue.

Until today.

I was in the shower when I felt it come off.

Oh no! I just put it on yesterday! There’s a nationwide shortage and I was just able to find a good source! I dropped to my knees, desperately trying to find it, which was no easy feat with no glasses on and everything being all wet because … shower.

Finally! I found it! I carried my treasure out of the shower triumphantly, wiped the suds off it, and unceremoniously slapped it back on where it used to be.

It wouldn’t stick anymore.

Suddenly I heard Nana’s voice in my head telling me not to waste anything. Nana would not be okay with me throwing away a perfectly good patch, even if it had lost all of its sticking potential.

I had about three minutes to decide what to do, and exactly zero better options. I briefly considered glue until common sense took over. But don’t worry – I’m happy to say it’s on me!

The fact that it’s stuck on with duck tape is completely irrelevant.
