Come Here Doggy!

Today was one of those days in April that is not only stunningly beautiful but the perfect balm for a winter-weary spirit. It was 80 degrees – and to give you some perspective, a week ago here in NH we had 4-6″ of snow coming down. Yes, the weather is just like that here.

Since I had a little time (translation: I maybe had an hour to spare) I left early in the morning to go to the beach. There’s nothing that can’t be helped by some sunshine and salt air, so even though I had many things to do at home I allowed myself this. I love arriving early before the crowds; it’s so peaceful. I also like to giggle in the afternoon watching people desperately looking for a spot. I’ve been there so I’ve earned the right to laugh.

I always start my day at the beach off with a long walk up and down the boardwalk. This morning I found myself walking behind a young mother with two children in a stroller: a baby and a little girl of maybe 2 or 3. As I watched, the little girl waved to every single person she passed, loudly calling out “Hello!” with excited glee. Everyone, young and old, returned her wave and her greeting with a grin. This child singlehandedly brought a smile to every face she passed.

But the best part was the dogs. Every time she saw a dog, she would reach out with both hands and scream “Come here doggy! Come here!” Her little feet kicked and her hands opened and closed with the anticipation of petting the dogs. And here’s the kicker: just about every single person with a dog complied with her request, bringing their dog over to meet her.

I think this child has cracked the code of life before she’s even gotten her adult teeth: Be genuinely happy to see people, say hello, smile, and always – always – ask to pet the dogs.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to see if I can go meet some dogs by yelling out for them to come here.
